Adler in the Home, Family, Community and Schools

Presented by Libby Stevenson and Ferderica Vermeir

Parents, Libby Stevenson and Federica Vermeir, describe how their encounter with Adlerian psychology had a positive effect on their families and led to their training to become facilitators of parenting courses.

Parenting was never easy, but today it is even more difficult than before. We face a multitude of different approaches and advice on how to be the perfect parent. One day we embrace an authoritarian style, the next day we give in and become permissive.

The philosophy and teachings of Alfred Adler can help and support parents in their task. The parenting courses that we have been co-facilitating in a school in North West London aim to develop skills that will increase mutual respect, cooperation, enjoyment and love.

Nobody is an expert. Mistakes are wonderful opportunities to learn. We need to understand human nature and ourselves. Parents and schools need to work together for the wellbeing of their children.

Libby Stevenson is a parenting educator and coach as trained by Grendon Haines. She was born and raised in the US. She has a bachelor of science degree in bio medical engineering and an MBA in finance. She has worked in banking and in 1991 moved to London with her husband. She has 4 children – all born in London. She came to parenting courses five years ago when her children entered the challenging teen years. She has completed parenting courses taught by Grendon Haines, School Psychologist and Graduate of the Adler School of Professional Psychology, Chicago, and held at a North London independent school. She realised that the philosophy, strategies, techniques and ideas she was learning were having a positive effect on her family. As a result, she has joined Grendon and has become a facilitator of his parenting classes.

Federica Vermeir is a parenting educator and coach as trained by Grendon Haines. She was born and raised in Italy. She completed a Laurea (four years undergraduate degree) from the Universita’ Degli Studi of Milan with a psyco-pedagogic specialisation. She lived in France and Turkey before settling down in London. She is married and has three children. She met Grendon Haines, a School Psychologist and Graduate of the Adler School of Professional Psychology Chicago, in 2008 when one of her children was attending an independent boarding school in North West London. The discovery of Adlerian psychology and its principles had an important effect on her life and her approach to parenting. After participating in several parenting courses she decided to train to become a facilitator and is now enjoying working with Grendon Haines and Libby Stevenson.
