The Hertha Orgler Memorial Lecture: “I Had a Dream Last Night”

It is common knowledge that we process our day to day experiences at night. We reframe and process them there according to our lifestyle, our personality.

Sigmund Freud already mentioned that dreams are directed towards the next day and tone our emotions and expectations towards the future.

Alfred Adler, an early follower and co-worker of Freud, stresses this orientation in his goal oriented theory and practice and sees dreams as a means for problem solving. The dreams are seen as metaphors which have to be interpreted in order to understand and help to solve current and/or older conflicts. Adler saw in dreamwork some similarities to working with Early Recollections.

Gerhard Baumer will give some theoretical background on Adler’s ideas at the beginning and then demonstrate how Adlerians would work with Dreams and Early Recollections in a counselling or therapeutic setting.

Gerhard Baumer studied Economics and Psychology in Berlin followed by a training as counsellor and clinical psychotherapist at an Adlerian Institute in Berlin. He works as a registered psychotherapist in private practice. Gerhard is on the faculty of the International Committee of Adlerian Summer Schools and Institutes (ICASSI) where Dreams is one of his offered topics. Gerhard provides training input for the Diploma and Continuing Professional Development programmes in Cambridge and Bucks as well as in Ireland and some other countries.
