Charles Bradlaugh and the National Secular Society

The National Secular Society was established by the political activist and atheist Charles Bradlaugh in 1886. The Society aimed to promote secularism and argued for a division between church and state. As a national organisation, it brought together smaller secularist groups from around the UK to help coordinate and strengthen their campaigns.

Bradlaugh’s statue stands in Abington Square, Northampton and his birthday, 26 September, is remembered every year. These photos from the National Secular Society Archive (held at Conway Hall), show members commemorating Bradlaugh at the statue in 1966.
