Sian Williams on Resilience
26th June 2016 · 11:20am - 1:00pm
In person | Virtual event
What makes some people get back up when the most difficult and challenging life events knock them down?
In this Sunday Sermon, BBC broadcaster Sian Williams will draw on her own experience of a recent life-changing event to offer a guide for all those going through tough times.
Although best known as a journalist and the face of BBC Breakfast for over a decade, Sian Williams is also a trained trauma assessor and spent two years investigating psychological stress. She joins The School of Life to explore the science of resilience and growth after trauma. Are some more people more resilient than others and if so, what can we learn from them?
Sian has learned from those who have rebuilt their shattered worlds, feeling changed and stronger, with a new perspective on their lives, relationships and work. Alongside their stories, she’ll tell the story of her own path through trauma, ultimately letting us all see that it’s not just possible to survive, but to thrive.
Sian Williams is an award-winning journalist with three decades of experience and is well known nationally for her work on BBC television and Radio 4. As well as continuing her BBC work, she has also joined ITN/C5 as the ‘face’ of their flagship 5pm news programme. From 2001 until 2012, Sian co-presented BBC Breakfast from Mondays to Thursdays alongside Dermot Murnaghan, and later Bill Turnbull. She regularly anchored the BBC News at One and also presented the News at Six and the News at Ten, as well as hosting prime time BBC One series. Sian has been the presenter of the factual BBC One programme SUNDAY MORNING LIVE since 2014 and recently made two Radio 4 series about the mind, with another in production. She has also written articles for many newspapers on trauma and stress and has an MSc in Psychology.
