Sunday Concerts: Karolos + Pre-Concert talk

“Expressive… brilliant… virtuosic” (The Observer), Karolos perform Mozart’s masterpiece, the E flat Divertimento which they have recently recorded, alongside gems by J.S. Bach. The group also commemorates the centenary of Stephen Dodgson’s death with a performance of his Second String Trio. Karolos have a great affinity with the music of Dodgson, having recorded his chamber works to great acclaim: “an absolute joy, the performances little short of ideal, perfect in intonation and ensemble, lively and delicate as required” (Guy Rickards, Gramophone). This is truly a concert of great variety, travelling through the Classical canon with landmark masterpieces for string trio.

Pre-Concert Talk with Robert Matthew-Walker • 5:30pm

Exceptional amongst British composers of his generation, the music of Stephen Dodgson (1924-2013) has enjoyed a posthumous rediscovery for many music-lovers, who have been discovering afresh the qualities that make his work so distinctive and immediately appealing. Dodgson’s Second String Trio is a masterly work, and in his introductory talk, Robert Matthew-Walker will outline the essential features and background of this beautifully-composed score, a work that stands comparison with any in the genre of this compositionally demanding medium.

Conway Hall would like to thank The Stephen Dodgson Charitable Trust for their support of this concert.
