Join National Secular Society Historian Bob Forder for a fascinating walk through the streets of the City, following in the footsteps of London’s nineteenth century freethinkers, radicals and republicans.
Discover the birthplace of The Freethought Publishing Company, and hear how its founders Charles Bradlaugh and Annie Besant battled against church and state in their mission to provide educational resources that were affordable and accessible to the masses. Walk the alleys of Gunpowder Square and pass by Dr Samuel Johnson’s house to learn about writer and revolutionary Thomas Paine, and the mystery of his missing bones.
Along the way, Bob will share stories of how the written word shaped the freethought movement, and the brave people behind the pages, who risked all in their pursuit of a better, fairer world.
Bob Forder is the National Secular Society’s historian, a bookseller, freethought book collector, and former history teacher. His is also an contributing author to The Freethinker.
