Sunday Concerts: Amaia Quartet & Peter Cigleris + Pre-Concert Talk

The Amaia Quartet has risen to prominence as an exceptional string quartet based in London, U.K. An internationally diverse ensemble with members from 4 different corners of the world – New Zealand, England, Serbia and Scotland – the quartet shares a unifying passion for chamber music and a strong desire to explore the repertoire of the string quartet. Graduates of the Royal Academy of Music, Royal College of Music, Guildhall School of Music and Drama, Juilliard School of Music and Hochschule für Musik, Theater und Medien Hannover, their accolades include awards at the Enescu International Violin Competition (2016) and the Orlando International Chamber Music Competition (2017).

Peter Cigleris is in demand as a soloist and chamber musician, with a particular reputation in British music, having premiered works by Gipps, Benjamin, Wishart, Spain-Dunk, among others.

Cigleris presents them with a rich, consistent tone and splendidly mellifluous phrasing.” – BBC Music Magazine

Pre-Concert Talk with Robert Hugill
Mozart’s Clarinet Quintet, one of the first works to pair clarinet with string quartet, remained admired but little emulated until Brahms’ wrote his late masterpiece, whilst David Gow’s Quintet is one of a number of English works that stretch back to Sir Charles Villiers Stanford’s admiration for Brahms’ work.

Written at the time of Napoleon’s invasion of Vienna (for the second time in four years), Beethoven’s Serioso Quartet is his shortest and most compact. It also represented his temporary farewell to the quartet genre before starting his late quartets in 15 years later. Shostakovich’s First String Quartet represents the beginning of a remarkable sequence of intensely private, personal pieces and the start of his long friendship with the Beethoven Quartet who gave the Moscow premiere of the work
