The Eeden Quartet is named after Van den Eeden, one of Beethoven’s first keyboard teachers and a prominent influential figure in his formative years. The Quartet performs regularly throughout Europe. Highlights for 2015/16 include a tour of Scotland, Wales, Channel Islands and quintet concerts with Leslie Howard and Graham Oppenheimer.

This performance features three Romantic works. Schubert’s Quartettsatz D703 (1820) is the first movement of a string quartet that the composer never completed. The unfinished quartet is regarded as one of the first products of Schubert’s mature phase of composition. Secondly, Mendelssohn’s String Quartet in A minor (1827) features one of the earliest and most significant examples of cyclic form in music. Finally, Debussy’s String Quartet in G minor (1893) was written at the height of the fin-de-siecle and features impressionistic tonal shifts, characteristic of the composer’s style.
