Free Speech Under Attack
24th May 2016 · 7:30pm - 9:00pm
In person | Virtual event
Is free speech, our most fundamental human right, under attack in the 21st century?
Thanks to the phone in our pocket, we can now reach and be reached by up to four billion other human beings. Never has free expression been so accessible. Yet this world of hyper-connectivity leaves us open to both dangerous and gross intrusions into our private lives.
What limits should there be to what we say, write and show? What should be regulated by law, and what’s left to standards of behaviour that we set and try to keep ourselves? Who should decide?
To tackle a crucial issue of the modern age, join The Guardian’s Timothy Garton Ash as he publishes, Free Speech: Ten Principles for a Connected World, Joanna Williams, education editor of Spiked and author of Academic Freedom in an Age of Conformity, Rowan Williams, former Archbishop of Canterbury, and Kenan Malik , academic and author of The Quest for a Moral Compass.
Chaired by The Guardian’s Jonathan Freedland.
