A Woman’s Revolution in Northern Syria

Amidst all the barbarism and violence, there is one part of Syria that has stood out as a beacon of hope. The predominantly Kurdish areas that have formed the Democratic Federation of Northern Syria have established an autonomous bottom up democracy that should be a model for us all. In the midst of ethnic divisions, they bring in people of all backgrounds; in an area riven by religious intolerance they promote secularism, and in a region long dominated by inflexible patriarchy, they give a full role to women. Women are at the heart of the Kurdish revolution, and revolutionaries are not just young men and women with guns, but also middle-aged women in long floral dresses building the new society in the neighbourhoods where they live.
