 Conway Hall Annual Ethical Gala

Conway Hall’s mission is to curate, support and facilitate people and ideas that Make Ethics Matter.

 

Our inaugural Ethical Gala will be a celebration of what the Conway Hall Ethical Society, a charity, does. Presented by Iszi Lawrence, guest speakers including Dr Shola Mos-Shogbamimu, Safia Minney, John Hegley, Florence Schechter, and Nikesh Shukla – with more to be announced – will each talk briefly on an interesting, ethical subject close to their heart.

 

We will also be presenting our first Annual Ethical Award, with the winner a closely-guarded secret.

Safia Minney:

Safia Minney, MBE, is an award-winning social entrepreneur & internationally recognised for the company she founded, People Tree, the pioneer of sustainable fashion. Safia is leading influencer, adviser and international speaker on fashion, sustainability, climate action and Fair Trade. Author of ‘Slave to Fashion’, campaigning to eradicate modern day slavery in the fashion industry and ‘Slow Fashion’. Safia has recently joined other business leaders to establish Business Declares. Safia recently founded REAL Sustainability to promote sustainable living and leadership. Safia will be talking about her vision for a sustainable fashion industry – and our urgent need to transition to a just and net zero carbon economy. Read her blog on https://safia-minney.com. 

 

Nikesh Shukla:

Nikesh Shukla is an novelist and screenwriter. He is the author of Coconut Unlimited (shortlisted for the Costa First Novel Award), Meatspace and the critically acclaimed The One Who Wrote Destiny . Nikesh is a contributing editor to the Observer Magazine and was previously their columnist. Nikesh is the editor of the bestselling essay collection, The Good Immigrant, which won the reader’s choice at the Books Are My Bag Awards. He co-edited The Good Immigrant USA with Chimene Suleyman. He is the author of two YA novels, Run, Riot and The Boxer. Nikesh was one of Time Magazine’s cultural leaders, Foreign Policy magazine’s 100 Global Thinkers and The Bookseller’s 100 most influential people in publishing in 2016 and in 2017. He is the co-founder of the literary journal, The Good Journal and The Good Literary Agency. Nikesh is a fellow of the Royal Society Of Literature and a member of the Folio Academy.

 

Florence Schechter:

Florence’s background is in science communication and is the founder of the Vagina Museum. She came highly commended in the Women of the Future Awards 2017 in the arts and culture category for her work. As a science communicator, she has performed around the world at the Science Museum, Royal Society, British Science Festival, BlueDot Festival, Abu Dhabi Science Festival and the Grant Museum, to name a few. She also sits on the Trajectory, Ideas and Ambassadors Board of Cheltenham Science Festival.

 

David Rosenberg:

David Rosenberg is a secular Jew who is active in the Labour Party and in the Jewish Socialists’ Group. He works as an educator and tour guide and was the author of Rebel Footprints: a guide to uncovering London’s radical history in 2015. He launched the second edition of the book at Conway Hall in March 2019.

 

John Hegley:

Comic poet specialising in poems about dogs, glasses and vegetables. Initially seen both with and without his band The Popticians. Appeals equally to both adults and children, and comes as close to the accolade of ‘national treasure’ as anybody on the poetico-cabaret circuit. Or indeed anybody from Luton.

 

Dr Shola Mos-Shogbamimu:

Dr Shola is a New York Attorney and Solicitor of England & Wales with broad expertise in the financial services industry, an author, public speaker and political commentator featured in mainstream and online media. A political & women’s rights activist, she also teaches intersectional feminism to female refugees and asylum seekers; scrutinizes government policies from a gender and diversity inclusion perspective; and co-organises women’s marches and social campaigns. She founded the Women in Leadership publication as a platform to drive positive change on topical issues that impact women globally through inspiring personal leadership journeys; and established She@LawTalks to promote Women & BAME leadership in the legal profession through universities and secondary schools. She is also the Co-Chair of the American Bar Association Africa committee. An academic enthusiast, she has an Executive MBA (Cambridge); PhD (Birkbeck); LLM (London School of Economics & Political Science); MA (Westminster) and LLB Hons (Buckingham University).
