Haydn: Quartet in D Op.20/4
Schubert: Quintet in C D956
We begin our Autumn series of concerts with a quartet by ‘the father of the string quartet’ Joseph Haydn, in one of a set of works that were to define this medium for the next 200 years. Schubert’s epic masterpiece, composed just two months before his untimely death at the age of 31 was not published until 25 years later but has since remained one of the jewels of the chamber music repertoire.
