The Oppression and Resilience of Women

Central London Humanists Conway Hall Ethical Society and the National Secular Society are pleased to announce a joint event to celebrate International Women’s Day.

International Women’s Day: The Oppression and Resilience of Women Our Conference –

The Oppression and Resilience of Women will celebrate women’s achievements in the arts sciences and politics we will also look at health wealth and education and how society men and religions impede women. We will be highlighting the appalling oppression that many women still have to cope with in the 21st century and the positive achievements of women despite the many challenges they face and we will end the day with some comedy. Stalls include Newham Books Plan UK and Survivors Voice .

The confirmed speakers for the conference so far include: Anne Marie Waters – National Secular Society Sue Cox – Survivors Voice Pragna Patel – Director of Southall Black Sisters Sara Kahn – Director & Co Founder of women’s rights group Inspire Baroness Cox – Life Peer & CEO of the Humanitarian Aid Relief Trust (HART) Baroness Flather – Life Peer & Vice Chair & long standing member of the All Party Parliamentary Humanist Group Peter Whittle – Broadcaster and Founder of the New Culture Forum Lejla Kuric – Activist & Blogger Ahlam Akram – Journalist and founder of BASIRA Siana Bangura – Editor of Feminist blog No Fly on the Wall Marianna Fox – Director of Passion for Freedom Kate Smurthwaite – Comedian & Activist There will also be a selection of stalls relating to Women’s issues and achievements at the event.

We suggest minimum donation of £5 entry for unwaged or low waged and £10 waged which will go towards covering costs and any additional money raised will go to charities that support women chosen by our speakers. We will also be screening ‘Honor Diaries – Culture is no excuse for abuse’ on 12 March the first film to break the silence on ‘honor violence’ against women and girls in Muslim societies. The film is being promoted by BASIRA in the UK. The conference will run from 10.00 until 17.00.
