What will the consequences of Brexit be for the capital? In this London Society debate, organised in association with the OnLondon website, we aim to generate light rather than heat on the most significant issue facing London for a generation. Speakers will include Labour peer and former government minister Lord Adonis, London Assembly member and former Lib Dem candidate for the Mayoralty Caroline Pidgeon MBE and senior London Conservative Daniel Moylan.

London is Drinking

Join beer experts Pete Brown and Melissa Cole, gin-historian Richard Barnett, and London brewers and distillers for a celebration and discussion of London and it’s drinking history and culture; from the taverns to the gin craze, to craft brewing and beyond. Londonist and Conway Hall Ethical Society are proud to present an evening of ale, gin, pubs, conversation and a tipsy toddle through our fantastic city’s history and life.

Spring-heeled-Jack Karl Bell Fortean

One of London’s greatest monsters, Spring-heeled Jack has held the city’s imagination in his claws since he first appeared as “a ghost, a bear, and a devil” right up to contemporary comics and internet radio dramas featuring the leaping horror of legend. This talk explores Spring-heeled Jack’s appearances in and relationship to Victorian London. It considers his origins in the capital, and the way the metropolitan press gave life to a strange urban legend that went on to terrorise the rest of the country.

Is anarchism relevant in today's world?

When Tony Blair committed the British government to join the war in Iraq, the huge demonstrations against were unsuccessful. Has society learnt anything from this and, in particular, does anarchism have a role to play?

The ideal of anarchism is the abolition of all government and the organisation of society on a voluntary, cooperative basis without recourse to force or compulsion. Indeed, this is the ideal of socialism in general. Authoritarian and anarchistic socialism are associated with the names of Marx and Bakunin.
