A beautiful book plate from inside the 1824-1924 Centenary Souvenir Annual of South Place Ethical Society, designed by Ethel Kendall.

Text from September 1901 South Place Magazine:

“When the Library re-opens on Sunday, September 8th, copies of the book-plate, specially designed by Miss Ethel Kendall, will be found inserted in all the books. An emblematical figure of Hope, suggested by the initials of our Society, S.P.E.S., occupies the centre of the design-one hand rests on an anchor, and behind is a scroll bearing three names of paramount importance in the history of the Society. The Society’s full name appears in the border, which bas a conventional background of flowers and fruit. It is hoped that the design will meet with general approval.”

Ethel Mary Lohmeyer Kendall (1877-1960) was born in Battersea, London.
