Bloomsbury Festival: Answers from the Archive

Yesterday’s objects can be the answer to today’s problems. Join us in Conway Hall’s historic Library for a discussion on how archival objects can offer us new insights in addressing the challenges we face today. Archivists, researchers and artists will join the conversation, and share some of their favourite artifacts from the Conway Hall Library & Archives, the Wildgoose Memorial Library, the Marx Memorial Library and the May Day Rooms.

Since 1886, Conway Hall Library and Archives has been a haven for the radicals, political and social reformers and freethinkers who dared to dream of a better world. Beginning as a general lending library offering a wide-ranging collection of diverse subjects to suit the needs of the membership, the Library has since evolved and grown to become the country’s only specialist humanist library.

The Wildgoose Memorial Library is an ongoing accumulation of reference material that informs Dr. Jane Wildgoose’s work as an artist and writer. The Library is a constantly evolving work in progress, and a place for meditation and consultation on universal themes of life and death.

At the heart of the British Labour Movement for over ninety years, the Marx Memorial Library is home to a unique collection of published and archival sources on related subjects including the trade unionism, peace and solidarity movements and the Spanish Civil War.

The May Day Rooms is an archive, resource space and safe haven for social movements, experimental and marginal cultures and their histories. We proceed from the understanding that social change can happen most effectively when marginalised and oppressed groups can get to know – and tell – their own histories “from below.”
