Identity Search – Exhibition
21st September 2013 · 6:30pm - 6:30pm
In person | Virtual event
Artist Houria Niati invites you to the opening evening of her exhibition ‘Identity Search’. A celebration of her 30 years of Art in London. It takes time to recover from the indignities of colonialism to exploit its positive aspects let go memories of its deleterious side – or not and blend this shifting cavalcade with celebration of one’s indigenous culture. In the case of Algerian artist Houria Niati as usual the nuanced layers of heritage are complex. Start with Arab/Islamic add French colonialism mash it up with the Berber blood of her mother and the Arab of her father. To add to the mix Niati has been a diasporic artist since 1977 when she arrived in London. Since then she has built a global reputation with numerous exhibitions and musical performances. One of the most important North African contemporary artists she is being recognised with a major exhibition this autumn celebrating 30 years of London shows. We will see early to recent artworks from oils and pastels to digital installations. Admission is free and wine will be served. Located in the Brockway Room. The Exhibition will continue to 12 Oct 2013. For opening hours of the gallery please call 0207 061 6741
