Percy Bysshe Shelley: a literary and musical exploration of his humanism
18th October 2017 · 7:00pm - 9:30pm
In person | Virtual event
Rationality amidst idealism, social conscience and political activism amidst romanticism, atheism amidst spiritual gnosis, a key English literary figure in exile, speaking out for humanism, verily a humanist out of time — we invite you to an inspirational talk and musical presentation by John Webster that will reveal how humanist ideals animated the work of visionary Romantic poet Percy Bysshe Shelley.
With Shelley verses presented in a cycle of songs (“an interesting and enjoyable way to encounter the lyrics”), a narration voiced by Benjamin Zephaniah, and images from the locations of Shelley’s travels in Italy, this is an excellent opportunity to learn more about humanism in the 19th century and connect with the poet who looked forward to a democratic, pluralist, and secular future.
There will be Shelley literature and multimedia available for discounted purchase on the night.
John Webster has spoken at community meetings organised by groups from Oxford to Newcastle to south east London, and we are very pleased to welcome him to CLHG.
