Seeing Truth in Museums Conference
1st February 2025 · 1:30pm - 5:00pm
Doors open: 1:00pm
Brockway Room
This half-day conference brings together artists, curators, and Indigenous knowledge holders to critically examine the colonial legacies of museum collections. British artist and art historian Dr Jane Wildgoose and Tasmanian Aboriginal artist Janice Ross will lead discussions on how museums can address the violent and coercive histories behind many collections, tackle intergenerational trauma, and advocate for truth, reconnection, and reparation.
The event also features contributions from experts exploring how visual and material culture, collected during the British colonial era, can be reinterpreted and used to challenge unequal power structures.
Developed by Dr Wildgoose with Artquest and Conway Hall, this conference is part of the University of Connecticut’s Future of Truth / Seeing Truth initiative, supported by The Henry Luce Foundation.
Seeing Truth in Museums brings together artists, curators and Indigenous knowledge holders to offer critical perspectives on visual and material culture historically collected for museums in situations of unequal power, in often violent and coercive circumstances, during the British colonial era.
