For nearly five million years, humans have been intertwined with morality, continually inventing and reinventing the concepts of Good and Evil. In this Ethical Matters talk, philosopher Dr. Hanno Sauer explores humanity’s fundamental moral transformations, from our earliest ancestors to the present day.
At a time when it might seem that we’ve never disagreed more about what it means to be good or right, and the very concept of morality sits firmly in a grey area, Dr. Sauer asks: What is moral progress, and where might the evolution of morality take us next?
Dr Hanno Sauer is an Associate Professor of Philosophy at Utrecht University, the Netherlands. He is the author of Moral Judgments as Educated Intuitions (2017), Debunking Arguments in Ethics (2018), and Moral Thinking, Fast and Slow (Routledge, 2018).
Hanno’s book, The Invention of Good and Evil: A World History of Morality, will be available to buy in person from Newham Bookshop on the day.

Due to the age and Grade Il listing of the building, there is no lift access to rooms above the ground floor.
All the ground-floor rooms are fully accessible by wheelchair. Main Hall (street access, step-free), Brockway Room (street access, step-free), Bertrand Russell Room (street access, shallow ramp), Hive Cafe (street access, step-free), There is also an accessible toilet on the ground floor opposite the Brockway Room.
