Pre-Concert Talk with Robert Hugill •5.30pm
In the 18th and 19th centuries, music was something frequently experienced at home, concert going only gradually becoming the norm as the 19th century developed. And at home, everyone played, there were arrangements of all manner of famous works, from symphonies for piano duet to arrangements for instrumental ensembles. And composers got in on the act too, creating works for larger chamber ensembles. Beethoven’s early Septet became one of his most popular works, much to his dismay and other composers followed suit with Schubert’s Octet having a direct lineage to Beethoven’s work. Tonight, as we hear two French works for nine instruments, we explore something of this background.
